Creating a 511 Account

1. To create a 511 Alberta Account you are required to go to the 511 Alberta Homepage: https://511.alberta.ca

  • Click the “Log In” link. This will cause the “Log In” pop-up box to pop up over the map area in the center of your screen.
  • Click on the “Register as a new user” link second from the bottom of the “Log In” pop-up box.

2. This will take you to the “Create a New Account” page automatically.

  • Please fill in all required fields (marked with a red asterisk:* ).
  • Review that the information entered is correct, then hit the “Register” button.
    • NOTE: The email provided must be active and easily accessible as a verification email will be sent to this email address.

3. This will cause the “Create a New Account” page to redirect to the main 511 Alberta Page with the following message in the green banner at the top of the map, under the dark blue menu:
“Thank you for registering. An email has been sent to you with a link to confirm your account. You must confirm your account before you will be able to log in. Check your spam folders if you do not see the confirmation email in your inbox.”

4. An “Account Confirmation – Staging” email will be sent to the email account within a few minutes.

  • Please click on the link provided to confirm your account.
    • NOTE: Without clicking on the link, you will not be able to log in to your account.

5. After clicking the verification link the 511 Alberta webpage should automatically be displayed and read:
Your account has been successfully verified. Please log in to continue.
Your account can now be logged into at any time for use.

Navigating the Safety and Compliance Course

NOTE: The content provided in this guide is for navigation and course use guidance only. Any content may be subject to change.

1. TIP: To complete the training, save your progress and receive a certificate, you are required to have an account and be logged in with 511 Alberta.

You may click the 511 Alberta Tab in the top header bar to take you to the 511 Alberta page to begin the process of creating an account (see section Creating a 511 Account above for further help).

2. From the Welcome to the Safety and Compliance Course Page you may click on any module to begin.

3. Once in a Module you will see a navigation bar to the left and the current Topic screen on the right. This format is the same in every module.

NOTE: For mobile users the navigation bar (Contents List) will be found by tapping the three white bars at the

very top of the screen on the very right hand corner in the blue banner that has the Alberta Carrier Training logo.

       
 

4. Read through each topic to understand the learning outcomes for each module. The approximate completion time for each module is listed in the “Timeframe” dark blue text of the Introduction page for that module. Hyperlinked text shows up in light blue indicating either a glossary word or an external link that may be followed for more information.
Glossary words will open another tab in your web browser where all the glossary terms in this course are listed alphabetically. Close the Glossary tab when you are done or click the previous tab on your web browser to return to the topic you were reading.

5. To proceed to the next topic please click the next topic title on the side navigation bar, or click the "Next" button at the bottom of the topic information screen. To go back to the previous topic, click the previous topic title on the side navigation bar, or click the "Previous" button at the bottom of the topic information screen.

6. When you have read through the module content (all topics) there is a Self-Assessment at the end of the module. Please complete this Self-Assessment to test your knowledge about what you have just learned.
To start the self assessment please click on the light blue “Self-Assessment” link on the topic screen under the note.

7. For each question select the answer(s) that best apply by clicking in the circle beside the answer you want to select. Then you must click the “Next” button to proceed to the next question. The number of questions are listed under the “Next” button.

8. You may return from any question to a previous question by hitting the “Previous” button located beside the “Next” button at the bottom of a question.

9. On the last question of a Self-Assessment click the “Submit” button to finalize your answers and submit them for scoring. You will not be able to change any answers after clicking this button.

10. At the end of the Self-Assessment you will be able to see the answers that are correct

and incorrect and receive a final score at the bottom of the questions and answers list.

 

 

11. After completing the Self-Assessment of a module, please progress to the next module by clicking on another module button from the Welcome to the Safety and Compliance Course Page. You may travel to this home page at any time by clicking the “Home” button in the ribbon at the top of the page.

12. After completing all module Self-Assessments you will receive a certificate indicating the successful competition of this course that you may print and save as a PDF document.

Troubleshooting and General Frequently Asked Questions


Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Do I have to complete a course in one session or can I save my work?

  • Answer: The system automatically saves your work and you can exit at any time. When you log in, it will take you back to where you left off, but you can manually navigate to any other part of the course (that you have completed) to repeat or review a section.

Question: Do I get a certificate of completion for this course?

  • Answer: Yes, a certificate is available at the successful completion of the course Self-Assessments. You must log in to a 511 Alberta account to get a certificate of completion. To create a 511 Alberta account click here (or copy and paste https://511.alberta.ca/ into your web browser) to go to the 511 Alberta Homepage, click the “Login” link in the top right corner of the page, then click the “Register as a new user” link on the bottom of the “Login” pop-up box. A valid email address is required. See the section of this document on creating a 511 Alberta account for further information about this process.

Question: I am using Google Chrome and completed all the Self-Assessments but my Certificate of Completion did not appear for download. Where is the Certificate?

Answer: Google Chrome has a small pop-up ribbon at the bottom of the browser window to indicate a download is in progress and when it is finished. This will pop up automatically once the last Self-Assessment has been submited. Once the PDF has fully downloaded you may click it to open the Certificate and to save the Certificate in another location.
  • This ribbon may quickly disappear depending on some individual settings. If this should occur please click on the three vertical dots in the right hand corner of the browser window and click on the "Downloads" button.
                                      
  • This should open a new tab listing all your recent downloads. The Certificate of Completion will the the PDF document with the file name starting with certificate_of_completion. You can then click it to open the Certificate and to save the Certificate in another location.
                                        

Question: Can I retrieve my Certificate of Completion again after closing the original pop-up window?

Answer: Yes. To retrieve a copy of your Certificate please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the course page with your My511 Account.
  2. Click the “User” tab button at the far right of your screen in the dark blue navigation ribbon for the course. Then click on your email address located above the “Sign Out” words in the menu that appears.
  3. The “User Details” screen should load with a button saying “Get Certificate”. Click this button to retrieve a copy of your certificate. A pop-up should appear automatically asking you to save/print your Certificate.


Question: How long do I have to finish this course?

  • Answer: The cookies that capture your place in the module expire after 7 days. You can take longer to complete the course, but your location may be lost. However, you can easily navigate to any part of the course.

Question: Will I be able to view whether other people at my company have completed the course?

  • Answer: Not directly through this website at this time.

Question: Will I have access to the content of the course after I complete the program?

  • Answer: Yes.

Question: Is there a printer-friendly version of the course?

Question: My certificate shows my email address rather than my first and last name as it appears on my driver’s licence. Can I change this?

  • Answer: Yes, please go to the 511 Alberta homepage, and hover your cursor over the My 511 tab in the top right of the page. Then click on the Manage Account selection in the menu that comes up under the My 511 tab.  This will bring you to the page where you can change the name entered into the "Name" field for your account. Please ensure the name you enter into the "Name" field is your first and last name as it appears on your driver’s licence. Once this change has been made, you will be able to re-print and save a correct version of your certificate.
                              


Troubleshooting
  • Device Compatibility:
    • It is recommended to access the online course using a desktop computer.
  • Internet Browser Compatibility:
    • It is recommended to access the online course using the following internet browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and/or Microsoft Edge.
    • Ensure any Internet Browser used has JavaScript enabled so that all content displays and performs correctly.
    • If you are having problems using Internet Explorer, you can copy and paste the link to the online course into a different type of internet browser window (Chrome, Firefox and/or Edge) to continue using the course.
    • If you are using Internet Explorer and having problems viewing the online content, then you can reset the compatibility mode on your computer by following the steps below:
      • Newer Versions of Internet Explorer:
        • Go To Tools.
        • Go to Compatibility View Settings, Copy & Paste the course link, click add, click close.                                                                        
      • Older Versions of Internet Explorer:
        • Go To Tools.
        • Go to F12 Developer Tools.
        • There is a dropdown by a computer image icon that lists the version and compatibility view, if any can be set.
  • If screens or text do not load correctly, try reloading the page or closing and reopening your browser window.
    • If logged in progress should be saved.
  • If progress is not being saved even if logged in, please check that cookies for this site are enabled in your browser.
