This course was designed for new commercial bus and truck carriers in Alberta. Anyone can take the course; however, it is mandatory for carriers that are required to hold an Alberta Safety Fitness Certificate. This course contains six modules that should take approximately six to eight hours to complete. It was designed for commercial bus and truck carriers regulated under the National Safety Code program in Alberta. This includes individuals and organizations who have registered one or more of the following vehicles:
- Commercial trucks, tractors or trailers or a combination of these vehicles that have a registered gross vehicle weight more than 11,794 kilograms that operate point-to-point in Alberta.
- Commercial buses with a manufactured seating capacity of 11 persons or more, including the driver.
- Commercial and/or farm trucks, tractors or trailers or a combination of these vehicles that have a registered gross vehicle weight greater than 4,500 kilograms and that operate outside of Alberta.

This manual has been created to assist commercial truck and bus companies and their employees to operate safely and in a manner which is compliant with legislation relevant to the National Safety Code.
Registration Instructions
To complete the education, save your progress and receive a certificate, you are required to have a My 511 Alberta account and login.
- To create a My 511 Alberta account click here to go to the 511 Alberta homepage. Click the
icon in the top right corner of the page.
- Click the "Sign up" link in the pop-up box. A valid email address is required.
- Please remember to create an account using your first and last name as it appears on your driver’s licence. Otherwise, the certificate of completion will not be valid at the time of Alberta Safety Fitness Certificate application.
- Once you have completed all the self assessments in each module, your certificate will be automatically generated. Ensure you download and save or print your certificate. You will need to provide your certificate when obtaining a Safety Fitness Certificate.
It is recommended to access the online course from a desktop computer using the following internet browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and/or Microsoft Edge.
